Cost Prohibitive: Patient Care and
Chronic Illness in the US

Posted on: 11/17/08

A study published in the journal Health Affairs entitled, "In Chronic Condition: Experiences of Patients with Complex Health Care Needs, in Eight Countries, 2008", states that 54% of US patients in the study, "did not get recommended care, fill prescriptions, or see a doctor when sick because of costs, versus 7 percent to 36 percent in the other countries."

The study involved patients with chronic conditions including arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, cancer and depression.

Authors of the study write that, "while the U.S. did comparatively well on some measures of hospital discharge instructions and patient-centered care, chronically ill Americans often cannot afford to follow recommended care. Gaps in coverage and cost-sharing are undermining access and adherence."

The study abstract can be found by clicking here.
