About Reza Ghasemian, Mission Viejo's Support Group Leader

My name is Reza Ghasemian. Approximately 13 years ago, at the age of 18, I first set foot in the United States and since then I have been residing in California.

My desire is to become a physician-scientist. Two years ago, I graduated from CSU-Fullerton with a Bachelor of Science in biology. In 2011, I was accepted to the Bridges Stem Cell Research program at CSUF funded by the prestigious California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. During my internship at UC-Irvine, my research focused on the feasibility of patient-specific stem cell therapy.

One reason I am passionate about my chosen career is my own illness. The excruciating pain of AS found its way into my life when I was 24 years old, about seven years ago. Since then, I have been dealing with its consequences on a daily basis. I wanted to become a doctor and it terrified me that I might not be able to last the academic rigors of the field. Therefore, I decided to accept my condition with its limitations and make the best out of my pain.

Today, I feel it is time to expand my horizons and get more involved in my community. Most importantly, I want to put the skills that I accumulated to better use. I feel a sense of responsibility towards those who suffer from chronic illnesses. I am hoping to serve as a bridge between new scientific advances and my peers. Relying on my background in biology, I want to help inform those affected by spondyloarthritis of new discoveries. Doing so will allow those affected, including me, to better communicate our needs and concerns with our physicians, and hopefully make better decisions that will improve the quality of our lives.
