SAA Recognizes ENBREL Approval by FDA as Milestone in AS Treatment
Sherman Oaks, CA (July 24, 2003) -- The Spondylitis Association of America (SAA) today released the following statement regarding Enbrel™ (etanercept), the first biologic medicine approved to treat ankylosing spondylitis (AS) in the United States.
"On behalf of the more than 350,000 people in the United States who live with AS or a related disease, we applaud the FDA for the milestone of approving Enbrel to treat AS," said Jane Bruckel, BSN, RN, and Executive Director of the SAA. "The SAA believes that treatments, like Enbrel, can greatly enhance the quality of life for people with AS and that we should have as many options as possible to treat this disease, which can have a devastating effect on people's lives."
The mission of the SAA is to be a leader in the quest to cure AS and related disease and to empower those affected to live life to the fullest.
"SAA is working every day to advance our understanding of AS and to work towards a cure. We are encouraged that new breakthroughs in genetics will lead to a cure. However, until there is a cure, it is vital that people have appropriate treatment options. We are pleased that there is research continuing to bring new treatments to people living with AS or a related disease."
About Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing Spondylitis, often called arthritis of the spine, is a painful and progressive form of spinal arthritis that usually affects people under the age of 35 years. AS typically begins in the late teens and early twenties and can result in fusing of the spinal vertebrae, hips and other joints. Often misdiagnosed as "just back pain," or undifferentiated arthritis, AS can affect vision and internal organs as well. The SAA estimates that at least 350,000 people in the US suffer from AS; thought-leaders believe the number is closer to one million.
