SAA Applauds Senate for Passage of Genetics Testing Non-Discrimination Bill; Calls for Quick Passage by the House
(Sherman Oaks, CA) - The Spondylitis Association of America (SAA) applauds the U.S. Senate, which today approved language that would prohibit insurers from raising premiums or denying coverage based on the results of genetic testing. Senate bill S.1053 would also make it illegal for insurers to require such tests.
"Every day researchers are finding that genetics can tell us a lot about diseases, such as spondylitis," said Jane Bruckel, BSN, RN executive director of SAA. "This bill, which the SAA has been working on since 1997, would ease the fears of many patients who won't get tested for fear of losing their job or insurance coverage."
The Senate version of the bill (S.1053) would bar employers, employment agencies and labor unions from using genetic information to make hiring or compensation decisions and would permit genetic testing only to monitor the impact of potential workplace hazards. There is a version of the bill (H.R. 1910) that is pending in the House of Representatives.
"The SAA urges the U.S. House of Representatives to review H.R. 1910 and pass this very important legislation as soon as possible," said Bruckel.
About Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing Spondylitis, often called arthritis of the spine, is a painful and progressive form of spinal arthritis that usually affects people under the age of 35. AS typically begins in the late teens and early twenties and can result in fusing of the spinal vertebrae, hips and other joints. Often misdiagnosed as "just back pain," or undifferentiated arthritis, AS can affect vision and internal organs as well. The SAA estimates that up to 1 million people in the U.S. suffer from AS or a related disease.
