Scientists hope that the discovery of the hormone, amylin, could lead to new treatment for osteoporosis. Researches have found that mice who lack amylin have less bone mass than those who actively produce the hormone.
This is good news for AS sufferers, given that osteoporosis is a well-recognized complication of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). If scientists can find a way to replace amylin, it could potentially provide a way to prevent osteoperosis.
