HRT/biphosphonate combo no better than either alone for osteoporosis

3/5/2004

From: Rheumawire, February, 2004

Although most previous studies have favored the combination of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and alendronate for the purpose of increasing bone mass in patients with osteoperosis, new findings indicate that combining of these treatments does not increase bone mass more than when using either treatment alone.

The study of postmenopausal women to be published in the February 2004 issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism may, according to Dr. Errol H Rushovich, cause physicians to “lead us to examine our use of these drugs in combination, and we would be less likely to use them in combination in osteoperosis and may examine patients who are currently on the combination.”
