Methotrexate Shortage

Orignially posted: 11/04/2004
Updated: 12/10/2004

UPDATE: Date of Availability
Bedford Laboratories has stated that their 50mg, 8&10 ml vials of preservative free injectables of methotrexate should be available on December 29, 2004. The 200mg, 8&10 ml vials will not be available until January 30, 2005.

The primary manufacturer of methotrexate injectable, American Pharmaceutical Partners, Inc. (APP), is currently on backorder for the methotrexate 50 and 200mg, 25mg/ml injectable vials with preservative. APP hopes to have the medicine back on the market between the 3rd and 4th week of December.

Methotrexate is a chemotherapy drug that is also used to treat lymphomas and leukemia, but in the case of AS, given in much lower doses via injection or taken orally. Click here for more information on methotrexate in the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis.

If you are currently taking methotrexate and have concerns about the shortage, we suggest that you speak with your physician. Both oral methotrexate and the injectable without preservative are still available.
