Passing the senate unanimously on February 17, 2005, the act is meant to safeguard an individual's genetic identity when seeking employment or applying for health insurance.
As genetic sciences move forward, and genetic predispositions and possible genetic causes to various health related issues are discovered, legislation becomes necessary to protect people from a potential new form of discrimination: Discrimination based on ones own genes. GINA is just such legislation.
An email from the Coalition for Genetic Fairness stated that they were not only extremely pleased with the outcome, but that they "will review the efforts that got us to this point and detail an aggressive strategy to pass the Genetic Nondiscrimination legislation this congressional year."
SAA is part of the Genetic Alliance, which supports this legislation.
