Body Weight and Composition Changes During TNF Therapy for Spondylitis

8/9/2005

A recent study out of France is reporting that people taking TNF-alpha blockers for treatment of spondylitis tend to have changes in both body mass and bone mineral density.

The study, entitled, "Body weight, body composition, and bone turnover changes in patients with spondyloarthropathy receiving anti-tumour necrosis factor alpha treatment," examined patients taking both Remicade and Enbrel. They found that, although there was an increase in weight, it was attributed to lean muscle mass and there were no changes in fat mass observed in the participants of the study. Also, it was found that bone mineral density (BMD) increased during TNF alpha treatment.

Published in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases, more information can be found in the study's abstract by clicking here.
