The Academy of American Family Physicians (AAFP) warns that you and your doctor should do research before selecting herbal supplements to help treat what ails you. A number of supplements can cause problems if you have certain health conditions.
You should also be aware that certain supplements can have potentially harmful drug interactions with prescribed medications. The AAFP website has lots of useful information to help you make an informed decision regarding the use of herbal supplements:
The AAFP states that, although herbal supplements may contain natural ingredients, some of these products also contain allergens and chemicals that aren't necessarily listed on the label and could potentially make you sick.
Remember that the FDA does not scrutinize supplements the same way they do pharmaceutical medications. It is always best to consult your physician before deciding to take a new supplement.
