Two new studies have been published on psoriatic arthritis and reported in stories by Reuters via Medscape News.

The first story, "Nail Dystrophy a Predictor of Psoriatic Arthritis in Psoriasis Patients", states, "Less than 10% of psoriasis patients develop psoriatic arthritis during their lifetime," but that, "clinical predictors of psoriatic arthritis included scalp lesions (hazard ratio 3.89), nail dystrophy (HR 2.93), and intergluteal/perianal lesions (HR 2.35)."

The second, "Anti-IL-12/23 Monoclonal Antibody Useful for Psoriatic Arthritis", discusses the use of ustekinumab in treating psoriatic arthritis. Ustekinumab is in stage II trials.

"Treatment with ustekinumab, a monoclonal antibody against interleukins 12 and 23, can reduce the signs and symptoms of psoriatic arthritis and is well tolerated," the study states and that there is a need for medications to treat patients in cases when "standard treatments, such as disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs and anti-TNF agents, fail."
