The genetic background of ankylosing spondylitis

Ankylosing spondylitis is known to be highly genetic in nature. The HLA-B27 antigen has been accounted for 20 to 50% of the total genetic risk for this disease, but other genes have been discovered that may lead to susceptibility.

An article published in Joint, Bone & Spine outlines the other genes that may have influence, including:

  • IL-1 cluster on chromosome 2
  • IL-23R gene on chromosome 1
  • ARTS1 genes on chromosome 5 with AS
