Reduction of Direct and Indirect Costs in Patients with AS Receiving Enbrel (etanercept)

Posted on: 1/23/2012

The TNF-a inhibitor class of medications - also called "biologics" - have shown great promise in treating ankylosing spondylitis. Enbrel (etanercept) was the first TNF-a inhibitor approved by the FDA for treating ankylosing spondylitis back in 2003, with Simponi (golimumab) being the 4rth biologic and most recent to be approved in 2009.

One of the biggest challenges facing those who are prescribed a biologic medication is cost. Depending on insurance - or lack thereof - the out of pocket costs of these medications can be very high.

A study published in the journal, "Rheumatology", examines a related side of the story in relation to cost : The effect of etanercept (ETN) in AS on cost, work productivity and quality of life (QoL).

The study authors conclude that Enbrel, "significantly reduces direct and indirect health-care costs and increases work ability and QoL in AS."
