An Ankylosing Spondylitis Iron Man

Posted on: 5/31/2012

Meet Helgi Olafson. An athlete with Ankylosing Spondylitis and aspirations of competing in the prestigious Ironman World Championships, a long distance triathlon so grueling that only the best of the best can qualify.

Helgi is starting his journey to Ironman 2013 with the Kona Marathon in Hawaii, which is where he is fortunate enough to live. Helgi's goals include raising spondylitis awareness through his competitions as well as fundraising for the cause.

"My next race is the full 26 mile Kona Marathon here on the Big Island of Hawaii on June 24th, 2012. I am setting a goal of raising more than $5000 for the Spondylitis Association of America and I am setting a personal goal of finishing in the top 50 runners overall and doing so in under 3 hours. Please help support me in raising awareness for ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS by donating at least one dollar per mile."

This marathon is just the starting point for Helgi as he is determined to reach great heights.

"I am on a mission to raise awareness and money for the Spondylitis Association of America through my competitions and rise to the top as a professional triathlete with Ankylosing Spondylitis. IRONMAN 2013 here I come. I have been training extremely hard and I won't stop until I get there!!!"

You can follow Helgi's journey on his Blog, where he documents his training and talks about much, much more.
