A New Adventure in Exercise for AS: Pilates

by James Choi | Posted on 10/31/2012

UPDATE 11/06/12: Charlotte just finished her 2nd pilates session and here are some of her thoughts: "An hour was gone before we knew it and I felt pretty amazing once we were done. No nap for me … I was more energized after this session. And completely surprised that I did as much as I did."

Follow her blog at http://pilatesandas.blogspot.com/.

SAA's own Charlotte Howard has started a blog about Pilates and AS after she went to see her rheumatologist recently because of a new pain she felt the past year or so - tendonitis in her shoulders. After trying physical therapy on and off for the past 10 years she was suggested to see a new doctor. The options given to her were botox, steroids and pilates. She ended up choosing pilates and has started a blog so we can all experience her journey together.

Charlotte's blog - Pilates and AS - will hopefully give us an insight for a different way to improve the physical capacity in AS patients. Looking back, in May 2011 we posted a study that showed pilates to be an effective exercise for ankylosing spondylitis.

Good luck, Charlotte, and thank you for sharing your story!
